UAE University is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) courses as a compulsory part of its curriculum, a decision that marks a significant shift in how the institution prepares students for a rapidly evolving job market. Starting from the fall semester of the 2025-2026 academic year, all undergraduates, no matter their field of study, will be required to complete AI courses.

Dr. Ahmed Al Raisi, Acting University President, described the move as a strategic leap forward. “We’re not just adding new courses; we’re reshaping how we prepare students for the world they’re stepping into,” Al Raisi said. “Our goal is to equip every graduate with a solid understanding of artificial intelligence, making them more adaptable and competitive.”

The university’s plan is part of its AI roadmap for 2025–2031, a broader effort to integrate cutting-edge technologies into higher education. Dr. Fikri Kharbash, Acting Dean of the College of Information Technology and Executive Director for AI, highlighted the importance of exposing students to AI concepts early on. “This initiative isn’t just for tech majors — it’s for everyone. Whether you’re studying medicine, engineering, business, or the humanities, understanding AI will be crucial in the coming years,” Kharbash noted.

To meet the diverse needs of its student body, the university has designed four introductory courses:

  • Introduction to AI: A general course that offers a broad overview of the field.

  • Fundamentals and Applications of AI: Focused on key concepts and how they apply in real-world settings.

  • AI for Engineering: Tailored to engineering students, covering AI applications in design, automation, and innovation.

  • AI for Medicine: Aimed at medical students, exploring how AI is transforming healthcare, from diagnostics to personalized treatment.

These courses were developed by a team of expert faculty members to ensure they are accessible, engaging, and relevant to each discipline.

By weaving AI into the core curriculum, UAE University is signaling a deep commitment to staying ahead of the curve. The hope is that when students graduate, they won’t just understand their chosen field — they’ll also know how to navigate and leverage the AI tools reshaping industries worldwide.

This initiative underscores the university’s broader mission: to provide an education that’s not only academically rigorous but also practical and forward-looking, helping students thrive in an increasingly digital world.
