For 15 years, Qafila Jewellery has stood as a shining emblem of Emirati creativity, weaving the nation’s culture, traditions, and heritage into exquisite jewellery designs that speak to the world. Established by Hamad bin Shaiban Al Muhairi and Abdullah bin Jafla, Qafila was born from a desire to create a prestigious Emirati brand rooted deeply in the UAE’s identity rather than relying solely on global labels.
One of the brand’s proudest creations is the UAE Medal of Culture and Creativity, awarded to outstanding Emirati talents across various fields. For Hamad and Abdullah, designing this medal in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture was not just an achievement, but a testament to the UAE’s commitment to celebrating and nurturing local excellence.
“We wanted to create a brand that presents jewellery inspired by our culture and traditions in a contemporary way that appeals to everyone, not just Emiratis and Arabs,” said Al Muhairi. “Each of our designs carries a story drawn from our heritage to share with the world.”
Design Rooted in Meaning
The medal design combines heritage and modernity, symbolising cultural excellence and the UAE’s ambitious future. Its five symbolic elements include:
-
The falcon at its centre, representing strength and vision.
-
The sun, embodying life and energy.
-
A fort, reflecting historical roots and protection.
-
Beads, symbolising unity among the seven emirates.
-
Sadu woven patterns by Emirati artisans, with colours inspired by camel racing traditions.
At its heart lies a unique coin featuring motifs from the UAE’s sea, desert, and mountains, tying together the nation’s diverse landscapes.
Facing Challenges with Determination
Building Qafila was not without obstacles. “Every project faces challenges,” said Al Muhairi. “What matters is having awareness, market insight, and the determination to find solutions and continue moving forward.”
Looking ahead, Qafila aspires to reach international recognition, introducing the richness of Emirati heritage to the world through designs that merge authenticity with sophistication.
Celebrating Culture through Collections
Among Qafila’s most distinctive collections is “Al Maroud,” featuring miniature oud oil bottles transformed into necklaces and earrings. Inspired by Emirati grandmothers who blended perfumes, the collection reflects the Gulf’s timeless love for oud and fragrances.
Another celebrated collection is “Al Bahr,” honouring the UAE’s pearl diving history with designs featuring natural pearls, paying tribute to the divers who shaped the nation’s early economy.
In its “Siq” collection, Qafila repurposes old Emirati coins such as the 1 and 10 fils – no longer in common use – to create jewellery that preserves their historical value in a modern aesthetic.
Reimagining Ramadan Symbols
During Ramadan, Qafila launched its “Fanous” collection, opting for originality over traditional motifs like crescent moons and stars. The designs were inspired by geometric patterns found in Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain, crafted dynamically to allow disassembly and reassembly.
For Qafila, each creation is more than jewellery – it is a storytelling masterpiece, reflecting the UAE’s past, celebrating its present, and carrying its identity proudly into the future.
