With 2025 reaching its halfway mark, the Emirati film industry is showcasing its strength and ambition through impactful releases and upcoming cinematic milestones. This year began with a heart-touching story, and audiences can expect even more inspiring films in the coming months.
Earlier this year, Emirati cinemas welcomed “Mountain Boy,” a film that captivated viewers upon its release in April during Autism Awareness Month. The story follows Suhail, an Emirati child with autism who faces neglect from his father, embarking on courageous adventures in the majestic mountains of Fujairah. His resilience, determination, and pure-hearted journey left audiences moved, especially with the powerful performance of Nasser, a child actor with autism who brought genuine emotion to the screen. The film, directed by Zeinab Shaheen and written by Reihana Al Hashimi, was celebrated for its deep social message and authentic storytelling.
This strong start is only the beginning of a vibrant year for Emirati cinema. Filmmakers across the UAE are passionately working on multiple high-profile projects, many of which are in their final stages, preparing to premiere at prestigious festivals and theatres. Their dedication reflects an industry committed to sharing powerful Emirati stories with the region and the world.
‘City of Life Continuum’ – A Cinematic Landmark Returns
One of the most anticipated projects is “City of Life Continuum,” the sequel to the groundbreaking 2009 film “City of Life,” which redefined filmmaking in the UAE. The upcoming sequel promises to be even bigger, blending a compelling human story with visually stunning cinematography and innovative production techniques. It aims to set new benchmarks for the regional film industry, carrying forward the legacy of its predecessor while introducing a fresh vision for contemporary Emirati cinema.
‘Psycho’ – Thrilling New Emirati Action
Emirati director Amer Salmeen Al Murry is also introducing a bold new project, “Psycho,” written and produced by him and directed by his son Sultan Al Murry in his directorial debut. Having gained experience as an assistant director on his father’s films, Sultan steps confidently into the spotlight with this psychological action thriller.
“Psycho” features Omar Al Mulla, Issam Al Awad, Mersal Al Shamsi, Abdullah Al Jafali, Faris Al Balushi, and Sandra Hodges. The gripping story follows Faisal, a man with severe mental health struggles, who along with his friend Mohammed commits a series of crimes. After being chased by police, the duo escapes their village for a distant city, only to find themselves trapped in a series of shocking and unpredictable events that test their limits.
‘Hobbah’ – Elevating Emirati Horror
Director Majid Al Ansari is making a powerful return to horror with “Hobbah,” following his successes with “Zinzana” and the acclaimed supernatural series “Paranormal.” Produced by Spooky Pictures in collaboration with Image Nation Abu Dhabi, “Hobbah” is the first Arabic-language Emirati horror film to emerge from this partnership, marking a significant achievement for the local film industry.
Scheduled for release on October 30, the film explores the unsettling story of a wife and mother whose peaceful life turns into a nightmare when her husband returns home with a second wife. As she struggles to cope with this painful change, she begins to witness strange and terrifying events in their home, leading her into a harrowing battle with forces beyond her understanding that threaten her family and sanity.
