In a move that underscores its dedication to cultural preservation and sustainable urban development, Dubai Municipality has completed a pioneering heritage project in Deira, rejuvenating three key tourist trails across the city’s oldest marketplaces. With a total investment of approximately AED 9.5 million, the project reflects the emirate’s strategic efforts to conserve its historical charm while enhancing the visitor experience.
The initiative covers 1,784 meters of heritage pathways in the heart of the Grand Souk, benefiting more than 500 traditional shops and strengthening Deira’s position as a vital cultural and commercial hub.
A Vision Aligned with Dubai 2040 Urban Plan
This milestone project aligns with the broader goals of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, aiming to enhance sustainability, cultural heritage, and integrated urban development. The trail upgrades are also part of a broader mission to preserve and showcase Dubai’s architectural and urban legacy, positioning the city as a global cultural destination.
Three Revamped Heritage Trails
The project focused on upgrading three significant routes:

Gold Souk Trail – 995 meters

Al Ahmadiya School Heritage Corridor – 430 meters

Spice Souk Route – 359 meters
Together, these span an area of 25,800 square meters, connecting seven traditional markets, including the Souks of spices, perfumes, cookware, textiles, and more, while weaving through historic landmarks such as Al Ahmadiya School and the Gold Souk.
Enhancing Visitor Comfort and Aesthetic Appeal
To create a more inviting and culturally rich environment, the municipality introduced several infrastructure enhancements:

Shaded areas using traditional-style fabric canopies (over 400 square meters)

Improved shop lighting and signage for easier navigation

Refurbished pavements and ground markings to ensure uniformity and accessibility

Three redesigned public squares, each with seating for over ten visitors
Traditional materials like “sarooj” clay were used in the restoration to maintain the markets’ historic authenticity. Wooden shades were also renovated to protect visitors from rain and sun while preserving the visual identity of the area.
