In celebration of the 51st anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi’s assumption of leadership in the Emirate of Fujairah, the Government Media Office of Fujairah has released a powerful new book titled “With Zayed: Memories Narrated by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi”. The book captures a deeply personal and historical account of Sheikh Hamad’s experiences alongside the late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace.
Through its pages, the book sheds light on Sheikh Zayed’s exceptional personality, his visionary leadership, and his enduring legacy in building the United Arab Emirates. It serves not only as a tribute but as a reflection on moments that helped shape the nation.
The book is composed of 22 chapters, each carrying meaningful titles that echo the noble principles Sheikh Zayed embodied — values that became the backbone of the Emirati identity and the federation project. Chapters such as “Education Means Building People”, “Wealth Means Nothing If Not Used for the People”, “I Want All Gulf Children to Learn”, and the iconic “Give Me Agriculture, I Guarantee You Civilization” encapsulate the essence of his philosophy. Sheikh Zayed believed firmly in human development and regarded intellectual investment as the true wealth of a nation.
Leading the book is a heartfelt dedication by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, titled “Great Men Make History”. In his tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed, the Crown Prince recalls his very first encounter with him — a moment marked by the words: “You’ve become just like your father.” It is a memory that remains etched in his heart for its profound emotional and inspirational significance.
The book paints a multifaceted image of Sheikh Zayed — not just as a remarkable ruler but as a humble, visionary man who stayed close to his people and upheld unity above all else. Through Sheikh Hamad’s perspective, the book walks readers through landmark national moments, from the first cabinet meeting to pivotal stances on major Arab issues like the 1990 invasion of Kuwait and unwavering support for Palestine, asserting that “Arab blood is most precious.”
One of the most resonant themes revisited in the book is Sheikh Zayed’s statement: “Give me agriculture, I guarantee you civilization.” Far from being a passing remark, it embodied a comprehensive civilizational vision realized through large-scale afforestation, dam construction, and environmental conservation — all rooted in his belief that true civilization arises from respecting the land and investing in people.
The book also highlights Sheikh Zayed’s pioneering support for women’s empowerment. He viewed women as fundamental pillars in nation-building, and his progressive legislation opened doors for their full participation across all sectors of society, rightly earning them the title “Mothers of Generations” and positioning them as essential partners in the UAE’s development journey.
Moreover, the narrative revisits the transformation of Abu Dhabi into a global destination — a testament to Sheikh Zayed’s foresight and unwavering belief in the potential of his people and homeland.
“With Zayed” is more than a memoir — it is a journey through history, a record of leadership shaped by wisdom, generosity, and unwavering dedication. It is a cultural and educational treasure that enriches the Emirati and Arab library, and a testament to the legacy of a man who continues to live on in the nation’s heart and identity.
