The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) has officially declared Thursday, January 1, 2026, as a public holiday for government sector employees in celebration of the New Year. The announcement aligns with earlier news from the UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), which confirmed a paid holiday for private sector workers as well.

According to a circular issued by DGHR, regular government operations will pause for the holiday, and official duties will resume on Friday, January 2. Notably, this first working day of the new year will be designated as a remote workday for employees whose roles are suitable for working from home.

However, the DGHR clarified that the New Year holiday does not extend to all government departments. Exemptions apply to entities operating on a shift basis or those directly responsible for managing vital public services and facilities. These departments are authorized to set their own schedules and staffing needs to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations throughout the holiday period.

The circular emphasized the importance of flexibility and efficiency in managing work schedules for exempt employees, especially in departments that require continuous service.

In its message, the DGHR extended warm greetings and well wishes to the leadership of the UAE, as well as to citizens and residents, expressing hopes for a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
