His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, may God protect him, yesterday attended a gathering that brought together a number of individuals who witnessed, alongside the Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his fellow Rulers, may they rest in peace, the raising of the UAE flag for the first time at the moment of the Union’s establishment.
During the meeting, His Highness reviewed a collection of rare photographs comprising more than 60 images that have not previously been displayed. The photographs document historic scenes from the day the Union was declared and the UAE flag was raised for the first time on December 2, 1971, at Dar Al Etihad in Dubai.
The collection also includes an original copy of a photograph signed by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God bless his soul, in addition to the original negatives of the historic Union images.
His Highness expressed his pleasure at viewing the photographs and the significant symbolic and historical value they represent, as they capture defining moments in the nation’s history. He recalled the pivotal role played by the Founding Father Sheikh Zayed and his fellow Rulers, may they rest in peace, in realizing the dream of unity, building the foundations of the Union, and establishing a strong and enduring nation.
In a gesture of appreciation, His Highness hosted an Iftar banquet at Qasr Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi for a number of individuals who witnessed Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan raising the UAE flag for the first time. They expressed their pride and honor in having witnessed one of the most important moments in the history and unity of the UAE.
His Highness listened to their reflections and memories of the historic occasion when the dream of Union was realized. He also exchanged cordial conversations and Ramadan greetings with them and their families, praying that the holy month brings continued goodness and blessings to the UAE and its people.
