In line with the remarkable development of Dubai’s cultural sector — inspired by the wise leadership’s vision and deep commitment to culture as a key pillar of progress and prosperity — the launch of the Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA) marks a significant cultural addition to the UAE’s creative landscape.
The announcement came in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who reviewed the museum’s visionary design by world-renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The design masterfully blends the essence of Emirati culture with modern art.
The museum is being developed by Al-Futtaim Group on the shores of Dubai Creek, serving as an inspiring example of collaboration between the public and private sectors to deliver initiatives that enrich Dubai’s cultural ecosystem and further position the city as a global center for creativity and innovation.
Architecture Inspired by Nature and Heritage
The design of the museum draws inspiration from nature, incorporating elements such as water, sky, wind, and light. It takes the form of a three-dimensional curved shell embracing a circular exhibition hall shaped like a pearl.
The museum spans five floors. The first and second floors house four exhibition galleries. The third floor features a restaurant and VIP lounge, while the ground and basement floors include service areas and facilities. Outdoor spaces have been thoughtfully designed to include restaurants, cafes, and open areas for artistic activities like painting and creative expression.
Educational and Creative Dimensions
The museum’s design also emphasizes educational and cultural enrichment. It includes a library and study rooms, with plans to host global-level training programs that nurture emerging talent and contribute to the cultural and creative fabric of the UAE.
DUMA will host multidisciplinary exhibitions and educational events aimed at encouraging public engagement and fostering appreciation for the arts. It will also highlight local artworks during its events, offering a platform that supports young artists and increases the visibility of their work.

Tadao Ando, the architect behind DUMA, is one of the top five architects globally. His career is marked by prestigious accolades, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize — the most esteemed recognition in the field, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Architecture.” His notable works include the Chichu Art Museum in Japan, the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Texas, USA.
