Mercy Fountains in Dubai

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, posted a video on his official Instagram account highlighting the launch of a new environmental initiative called “Mercy Fountains”. Accompanied by the caption “In every living soul there is a reward”, the video showcases Dubai’s commitment to environmental stewardship and compassion.

Supporting Wildlife Through Sustainability

The Dubai Municipality has officially begun implementing the “Mercy Fountains” project, which involves installing 50 specialized water fountains for birds and wild animals across various parts of the emirate. This initiative aims to support wildlife by ensuring access to clean water throughout the year, reflecting Dubai’s dedication to environmental sustainability, compassion, and the protection of biodiversity.

Urban and Natural Integration

The plan includes the installation of 25 fountains in urban areas for birds, and another 25 in natural reserves and desert areas for wild animals. Built with high-quality, eco-friendly materials, these fountains are designed for durability, ease of maintenance, and minimal environmental impact.

Additionally, all units will be solar-powered, ensuring efficient, sustainable water delivery that aligns with the city’s broader environmental goals. The project is seen as an important part of Dubai’s vision to balance urban development with ecological responsibility.

A Charitable Foundation Behind the Project

This noble initiative is made possible through a sustainable charitable endowment by a benefactor from Dubai. It highlights the synergy between humanitarian values and governmental efforts, demonstrating how public-private collaboration can yield impactful results for nature and society.

The fountains will operate year-round—through both summer and winter—ensuring continuous support for the emirate’s flora and fauna.

Enhancing Dubai’s Urban Identity

The “Mercy Fountains” project aligns with the objectives of the Steering Committee for Urban Aesthetic Preservation in Dubai, which monitors and enhances the city’s appearance, cleanliness, and environmental harmony.

According to the committee’s framework, key indicators such as public cleanliness, urban coherence, behavioral values, and quality of life are used to assess the effectiveness of such initiatives. Compassionate actions, such as providing water for animals, are seen as a vital expression of the city’s civilized and human-centric identity.

Official Comments

Eng. Marwan Ahmad bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized that this initiative reflects the city’s leadership in combining urban beauty with environmental and humanitarian values. He noted:

“We are committed to supporting living beings in both natural and urban environments, driven by the compassion that defines our community.”

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, added:

“The project is executed with precise technical and engineering standards that consider the needs of various birds and animals, ensuring safe and easy access to water.”

He highlighted the teams’ focus on innovative solutions to support Dubai’s broader environmental goals.

A Continuing Journey of Compassion and Innovation

Dubai Municipality views this initiative as one step in a long-term series of developmental and humanitarian projects aimed at enhancing the city’s global standing in sustainability and urban excellence. The “Mercy Fountains” not only nourish animals but also reinforce the city’s identity as a model of balanced development, compassion, and environmental harmony.
