Dubai continues to strengthen its cultural landscape with the introduction of “Juthoor” (Roots), a new public artwork launched by Dubai Culture. The piece is part of the emirate’s broader vision to integrate art into everyday life and transform the city into an open, accessible gallery.
Located at Mercato Beach in Jumeirah, the installation blends naturally with its surroundings, offering visitors a quiet visual experience shaped by the elements of sea, sand, and sky. Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi drew inspiration from the trunk of the palm tree—an enduring symbol of life, continuity, and resilience in the region.
The artwork reflects patterns found in nature, from the movement of wind and shifting sand to the rhythm of ocean waves and even the paths of birds overhead. Through these elements, “Juthoor” creates a subtle dialogue between the environment and the viewer, inviting moments of reflection rather than imposing a statement.
Dubai Culture highlights that projects like this go beyond aesthetics. Public art plays a role in shaping everyday experiences, enhancing the quality of life, and making cultural expression more accessible. It also gives artists a platform to present contemporary ideas while staying connected to local identity.
Al Qubaisi describes the piece as a reflection of Dubai’s spirit and its deep relationship with place. The materials themselves carry meaning: stainless steel represents the present and future with its reflective quality, while palm fibers, with their earthy tones, symbolize a lasting bond with the land.
The location adds another layer to the experience. Visitors standing beneath the structure can view the open sea on one side and the city skyline on the other, creating a natural balance between urban life and the surrounding environment.
Designed in a form that subtly resembles a shield, “Juthoor” also suggests protection and shelter, echoing the comforting shade of a palm tree. More than just a sculpture, it stands as a quiet reminder of how nature, heritage, and modern life can come together in a shared space.
