This gathering aimed to foster collaboration among cities that integrate creativity into urban development strategies, with a focus on enhancing cultural and creative industries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"900\" data-end=\"1447\">As part of the event, Kholoud Khoory, Director of Projects and Events at Dubai Culture, presented groundbreaking practices in the use of innovative materials and sustainable resources. One highlight was Dubai\u2019s pioneering use of palm trees\u2014a staple of the local landscape\u2014to create future-ready materials. Her presentation explored how Dubai is reimagining its natural resources to drive innovation in sustainable design and promote the principles of the circular economy, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1449\" data-end=\"1972\">Khoory also showcased the UAE\u2019s efforts to repurpose what might otherwise be considered waste\u2014such as palm fronds and date pits\u2014into biodegradable plastics, eco-friendly plywood alternatives, and sustainable interior design elements. These innovative transformations reflect a broader effort to balance heritage preservation with modern design needs. She also offered a preview of the upcoming Dubai Design Week, scheduled for November 4\u20139, a major event that positions the city as a regional hub for design excellence.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"2038\">Spotlight on Emirati Talent at Saint-\u00c9tienne Design Biennale<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2487\">On the sidelines of the UNESCO event, Dubai participated in the 13th edition of the Saint-\u00c9tienne International Design Biennale, under the theme \u201cResources, Forecasting the Future.\u201d Emirati designer Kholoud Sharafi presented her work \u201cRaml\u201d (Sand), a ceramic-sand hybrid inspired by the fluid motion of desert dunes. The project explores the artistic and practical potential of sand, deepening the connection between nature and creativity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2489\" data-end=\"2821\">Another standout piece was \u201cTibrah\u201d by architect and designer Reema Al Muhairi. The project uses biodegradable fish scales to create sustainable alternatives to synthetic materials. Drawing on the UAE\u2019s maritime heritage, &#8220;Tibrah&#8221; references traditional oyster trapping sites, blending cultural legacy with forward-looking design.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2823\" data-end=\"2879\">Dubai in Portugal: A Seat at the Table of Bio-Design<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2881\" data-end=\"3194\">Dubai is also featured at the Covilh\u00e3 International Design Triennale in Portugal, a flagship event under UNESCO&#8217;s creative cities agenda. Hosted by the Municipality of Covilh\u00e3 and curated by Id\u00e9ias Emergentes Foundation, the event focuses on regional bio-design, local culture, innovation, and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3503\">There, Dubai Culture unveiled \u201cPalm Rest,\u201d a sculptural bench designed by Emirati architectural photographer Majid Al Bastaki. Inspired by the sight of local farmers resting beneath palm trees, the work pays homage to the emirate&#8217;s agricultural roots while offering a sustainable, functional piece of art.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"3505\" data-end=\"3542\">Dubai\u2019s Global Creative Footprint<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3544\" data-end=\"3625\">Khoory emphasized the importance of Dubai\u2019s presence on these global platforms:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3626\" data-end=\"3865\">\n<p data-start=\"3628\" data-end=\"3865\">\u201cInternational events like these allow us to showcase Dubai\u2019s unique design story while learning from other cities. It strengthens our global partnerships and supports the continued growth of creative industries in line with the SDGs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 data-start=\"3867\" data-end=\"3901\">A Legacy of Design Recognition<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3903\" data-end=\"4306\">In 2017, UNESCO named Dubai the first Creative City of Design in the Middle East. Since then, the emirate has implemented policies to solidify its role as a global design capital and a magnet for creative talent worldwide.
