In a step that reflects Dubai\u2019s move toward more sustainable food solutions, a delegation from Dubai Municipality visited a vertical farm inside a residential tower in the emirate. The farm has been developed and operated within Meera Tower at Al Habtoor City in Business Bay.<\/p>\n
The project is considered one of the modern initiatives that brings advanced farming techniques into the urban environment, in line with Dubai\u2019s efforts to improve quality of life and support innovation in food production within cities.<\/p>\n
Supporting Modern Farming and Food Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n The visit by the Dubai Municipality delegation came as part of the municipality\u2019s efforts to encourage the adoption of modern agricultural solutions and continue developing Dubai\u2019s food safety and sustainability system, especially as interest grows in projects that bring fresh food closer to consumers.<\/p>\n The delegation included officials from the Food Safety Department, who reviewed the farm\u2019s operating mechanisms, environmental control systems, food safety standards, and the technologies used for irrigation, lighting, and plant nutrition.<\/p>\n Producing Leafy Vegetables in Unused Spaces<\/strong><\/p>\n The idea behind the project is to make use of unused spaces in residential towers to produce fresh leafy vegetables. Instead of passing through the usual stages of transportation, storage, and display, residents of the tower can order vegetables directly from the farm.<\/p>\n This model provides a faster and more convenient way to access fresh produce, as residents can buy leafy vegetables from the operating company and receive them within a short time.<\/p>\n A Project That Supports Local Production<\/strong><\/p>\n Adel Al Karani, Director of the Food Safety Department at Dubai Municipality, said the municipality continues to support innovation in the food sector and encourage projects that improve the efficiency of local production while offering residents safe and fresh food options.<\/p>\n He noted that the vertical farm project in Meera Tower is one of the modern agricultural projects that aligns with new and sustainable urban standards. It also represents an opportunity to benefit from this experience in future real estate developments.<\/p>\n Reducing Dependence on Imported Produce<\/strong><\/p>\n Integrating vertical farms into residential areas helps strengthen local agricultural production and reduce dependence on imported leafy vegetables, while providing access to fresh produce throughout the year.<\/p>\n This type of farming also uses less space and less irrigation water compared with traditional agriculture.
