Each year, it celebrates leading architectural projects and gives finalists the opportunity to present their work directly to an international judging panel made up of renowned architects and industry experts.

The “Completed Buildings – Culture” category includes a wide range of projects, such as museums, libraries, galleries, theaters, movie theaters, concert halls, and performing arts venues.

To qualify for this category, projects must have been completed between January 1, 2025, and June 1, 2026.

A National Museum Telling the Story of the UAE

Zayed National Museum, the national museum of the United Arab Emirates, is located in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi. It opened its doors to visitors in December 2025.

The museum reflects a national vision that celebrates the UAE’s history and cultural heritage. It tells the story of the country from the earliest evidence of human presence in the region to the establishment of the modern state.

It also highlights the civilizations and cultural exchanges that helped shape the identity of the UAE. The museum draws its mission from the values and principles established by the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose legacy continues to inspire present and future generations.

A Design Inspired by Falconry

The museum was designed by internationally renowned architect Lord Norman Foster, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, together with the team at Foster + Partners. The architectural vision brings together innovation, sustainability, and national identity.

The design takes inspiration from falconry, a symbol closely associated with strength, ambition, and Emirati heritage. Five lightweight steel towers stand out as both visual and functional elements of the building.

These towers act as thermal chimneys, drawing hot air upward and supporting the building’s natural ventilation system. At the same time, glass surfaces help direct natural light into the exhibition galleries.

Each tower can also be controlled independently, helping improve the building’s efficiency and achieve a high level of environmental performance.

Architectural Spaces Reflecting the UAE’s Landscape

The exhibition galleries are arranged within an architectural structure that blends with the surrounding natural environment. The exterior is covered with textured, multi-faceted panels inspired by the varied landscapes of the United Arab Emirates.

At the center of the museum is Al Liwan, a spacious hall filled with natural light. It serves as the museum’s main gathering space, welcoming visitors and guiding them toward the different galleries and sections.

Throughout the year, Al Liwan hosts a diverse cultural program that includes live performances, panel discussions, intellectual events, cultural evenings, and presentations of art and heritage.

Through these programs, Zayed National Museum strengthens its role as a national platform for cultural dialogue and the exchange of knowledge, while also serving as an important institution dedicated to documenting the history and heritage of the UAE.

Winners to Be Announced in November

The winners of the 2026 World Architecture Festival Awards are expected to be announced during the festival in November.

Zayed National Museum’s inclusion on the shortlist reflects its growing presence on the international architectural scene. It also highlights the standing of cultural projects in the UAE that combine contemporary design, national identity, and sustainability.

Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi has been shortlisted for the 2026 World Architecture Festival Awards in the Completed Buildings – Culture category, alongside 18 projects from around the world.

[15
256
post-15505","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-english-stories","tag-news
["GET
