Behind Dubai International Airport\u2019s extraordinary transformation stands a long-term vision that has guided the development of Dubai\u2019s aviation sector for decades. The airport was established through the vision of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, may his soul rest in peace, who recognized early on the enormous potential of aviation and initiated the development of Dubai\u2019s airport and its open-skies policy. That vision was later carried forward under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, helping establish Dubai at the heart of the global aviation industry.<\/p>\n
Since opening on September 30, 1960, the airport has gone through successive phases of expansion and development, keeping pace with Dubai\u2019s rapid growth across trade, tourism, business, and aviation. In 2025, Dubai International recorded the highest annual passenger traffic in its history, welcoming 95.2 million travelers, an increase of 3.1% compared with 2024. The story of Dubai International Airport began on September 30, 1960, when the airport opened with a sand runway and limited facilities at a time when Dubai was beginning to take faster steps toward building a more open and globally connected economy.<\/p>\n
When it opened, the airport consisted of a compacted sand runway and a small building capable of handling DC-3 aircraft. Construction had begun in 1959 on a stretch of desert located around four kilometers from the center of Dubai at the time.<\/p>\n
As air traffic increased, development plans began early. In 1963, work started on a new asphalt runway, which was completed in 1965 and replaced the original sand runway. The project was accompanied by upgrades and renovations to a number of airport facilities, allowing the airport to handle scheduled night flights.<\/p>\n
During the 1970s, Dubai International Airport entered another stage of expansion, with several projects aimed at increasing operational capacity and keeping pace with the steady rise in passenger and flight numbers.<\/p>\n
The work included the construction of a new three-story terminal building and a control tower, as well as additional taxiways, runway extensions, and expanded aircraft parking areas.<\/p>\n

The facility cost around $1.2 billion and was designed to serve approximately 60 international airlines operating from Terminal 1.<\/p>\n
