The DHA has announced that since introducing its robotic surgery programme at Dubai Hospital in the latter half of 2022, the team has successfully completed over 145 operations utilising advanced robotic systems. This achievement reflects not just surgical volume but also the institution’s accelerating adoption of digital healthcare technologies as part of its academic‑integrated model of care.

According to Dr. Amir Sharif, the Executive Director at DHA, this milestone “represents a qualitative leap in the journey of our digital transformation in health care,” anchored in the Authority’s foundational commitment to “deploy the most advanced medical solutions” to upgrade healthcare services and elevate the human health agenda.

Under DHA’s broader strategy, all its hospitals and outpatient centres are being enhanced with digital systems to make the patient journey smoother, safer and more seamless. The robotic‑surgery programme is a core component of this drive.

Dr. Yasser Al Saidi, Consultant Urologist and Director of the Robotic Surgery Programme (and Associate Professor at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences), explains that robot‑assisted surgeries mark a “more advanced phase” in applying intelligent technologies in the operating theatre. As he notes, the system offers three‑dimensional high‑definition vision and precise robotic arms that operate via a console, enabling delicate interventions with greater accuracy.

Key clinical benefits cited include:

  • A blood loss reduction of more than 90 % compared to conventional open surgery.

  • Significantly shortened hospital stays—patients who once stayed up to two weeks are now often discharged in under three days.

  • Markedly fewer complications, less post‑operative pain and more rapid return to everyday life.

  • Robust training of the surgical staff in using these smart technologies, ensuring that high safety standards and minimal risk accompany the transition.

Procedures covered by the programme include specialties such as urology, general surgery and women’s health, where small‑port robotic access through several tiny incisions (rather than large open cuts) is now common. The surgeon sits at a console operating the robotic arms while viewing a magnified 3‑D image of the anatomy, allowing sophisticated tissue‑sparing work.

By embracing robotic surgery, Dubai Hospital and DHA are positioning Dubai as a regional hub for advanced healthcare, aligned with the “Patient‑First” ethos and underlining the emirate’s reputation as a destination for cutting‑edge medical care.

As this programme evolves, it will likely broaden into more complex subspecialties, while the digital infrastructure across DHA facilities continues to be enhanced—creating an ecosystem in which patient experience, surgical excellence and digital innovation converge.
