The UAE Ministry of Education has outlined the school attendance system for the first week of the 2026-2027 academic year as part of a gradual and flexible return plan. Schools will operate on reduced hours for four days before all grades move to full school schedules.
Under the plan, reduced school hours will begin on Monday, August 31, and continue through Thursday, September 3, 2026. All students will then return to full-time attendance starting Friday, September 4, giving schools an opportunity to organize student arrivals and distribute grade attendance during the opening days of the academic year.
Gradual Return for Students Over 4 Days
The first-week schedule is based on a gradual return of different grades. Each school will determine which students attend on each day from Monday through Thursday, according to its internal plan and level of readiness.
During this period, only the grades assigned to attend on a particular day will come to school, while students in the remaining grades will not attend that day.
The arrangement is designed to make the start of the school year smoother and give schools greater flexibility in managing movement inside school buildings and preparing for the full return of all students at the end of the reduced-hours period.
Reduced School Hours by Educational Stage
The plan sets different attendance hours during the gradual return period depending on the educational stage. Kindergarten students will attend from 8:15 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., for a total of three hours and 15 minutes.
For Cycle 1 students, schools will have two scheduling options. The first runs from 7:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., while the second runs from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Both options provide four hours of school attendance.
For male students in Cycles 2 and 3, reduced school hours will run from 7:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m., for a total of five hours.
Female students in Cycles 2 and 3 will attend from 8:15 a.m. until 1:15 p.m., also for a total of five hours.
Schools Given Flexibility to Organize the Return
The plan gives principals of schools, kindergartens, and educational complexes flexibility to arrange the gradual return schedule based on each school’s needs and readiness to receive students.
Schools may also increase the number of attendance days for some students when necessary, while ensuring coordination with school transportation providers, particularly in cases where buses are shared between schools, to avoid conflicts in arrival and departure times.
This flexibility allows school administrations to choose the most suitable arrangement for returning different grades while supporting an organized start to the academic year and ensuring that student services operate smoothly.
Scenarios for Organizing Grade Attendance
The gradual return plan includes two scenarios for distributing grade attendance during the first four days, allowing schools to select the arrangement that best suits their operational circumstances, student numbers, and approved schedules.
Under either scenario, reduced school hours will apply only to the grades scheduled to attend on that particular day, while students in the other grades will remain off campus until the return process is completed for all educational stages.
The system gives schools an opportunity to spread student attendance across several days, helping them organize arrivals and allow students to become familiar with schedules and school procedures before regular attendance begins.
Full School Hours Begin Friday, September 4
The gradual return period will end on Thursday, September 3, with all students starting full school hours on Friday, September 4, 2026, according to the official schedules approved for the new academic year.
The opening days of the school year will therefore serve as a short transition period, helping both schools and students ease back into the academic routine while organizing attendance, transportation, and other school services before all grades return.
The plan reflects a flexible approach to the beginning of the academic year, combining reduced hours with a gradual return of students before schools move into full and regular operations.
