The “1 Billion Acts of Kindness” campaign has reached a new milestone in its humanitarian and development journey after completing an integrated project that brought comprehensive change to a village in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The initiative was launched with the support of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives and the Varkey Foundation, through a strategic partnership between the 1 Billion Followers Summit and global content creator MrBeast, James Stephen Donaldson.
Launched during the fourth edition of the 1 Billion Followers Summit in January, the campaign has become a practical example of how digital content and the influence of creators can move beyond online engagement and contribute to real, sustainable change on the ground.
The project succeeded in creating an integrated development system built around five core pillars: clean water, education, food, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Within a relatively short period, the village moved from limited resources toward stronger basic infrastructure and broader opportunities for the future.
Digital Content Becomes a Force for Development
The project reflects the vision of the 1 Billion Followers Summit to harness the power of content creation and digital media in support of humanitarian and development causes, transforming the broad reach of content creators into a tool capable of making a direct difference in people’s lives.
Alia AlHammadi, Vice Chairperson of the UAE Government Media Office and Director of the 1 Billion Followers Summit, said: “The completion of the comprehensive development ecosystem in a village in Ghana represents the embodiment of the 1 Billion Followers Summit’s vision to establish a positive impact for the content creation and digital media industry, and to transform the influence of this digital space into a development engine that addresses humanitarian issues and changes the lives of communities for the better.”
She added: “Through this achievement, the campaign has succeeded in establishing a global model that demonstrates how content creation can bring about this radical transformation in the lives of communities,” explaining that “the success achieved by the campaign in partnership with MrBeast, and with the support of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives and the Varkey Foundation, represents a message of hope that began in the UAE and reached the world, inspiring everyone with what can be achieved when development efforts come together to strengthen a culture of giving and build a better future for human communities.”
The achievement also strengthens the role of humanitarian work based on innovation and impactful partnerships, particularly by combining on-the-ground expertise with the exceptional ability of digital content to reach large audiences around the world.
Education at the Heart of the Transformation
Education was one of the project’s central pillars, reflecting its essential role in creating a more stable future for children, families, and the wider community.
The work included the construction and renovation of classroom buildings from kindergarten through junior secondary school, in addition to building new housing for teachers to support the continuity of education and encourage teaching staff to remain in the village.
School meal programs were also introduced to reduce absenteeism linked to hunger, particularly among children whose families’ economic circumstances had affected their ability to attend school regularly.
Sunny Varkey, founder of the Varkey Foundation, said: “Education is the greatest gift we can give; it has the power to change the lives of individuals, families, and entire communities. What has been achieved through the campaign in eastern Ghana demonstrates what can be accomplished when we unite efforts in education, healthcare, and nutrition to remove the barriers that prevent children from learning and give them the opportunity to build a better future.”
He continued: “By combining the efforts of charitable organizations with the exceptional reach of purposeful content creators, we can inspire millions of others to become changemakers in their communities and contribute to creating positive change around the world.”
The project’s efforts also extended to raising awareness within the community about the importance of education and changing perceptions surrounding child labor, with the goal of keeping children in classrooms and giving them a better opportunity to complete their education.
MrBeast Leads a Movement with 20 Global Content Creators
MrBeast led a global movement alongside 20 international content creators who were selected as part of the fourth edition of the 1 Billion Followers Summit.
They participated directly in construction, preparation, and the implementation of a number of projects across the village.
MrBeast has a vast global digital presence, with his platforms recording more than 62 billion views annually and attracting more than 1.1 billion followers. This reach gave the campaign an opportunity to transform the village’s experience into a global story capable of reaching millions of people.
The creators worked alongside MrBeast and field teams to prepare educational and healthcare facilities, contribute to construction work, and support projects providing electricity and water.
The goal was not limited to improving one aspect of residents’ lives. Instead, the project focused on building an interconnected system capable of addressing essential needs in one place and giving the community a genuine opportunity for long-term development.
Providing Clean Water and Improving Public Health
Providing clean water and improving sanitation services formed a major part of the village’s development process, particularly given the severe shortage of essential facilities it had experienced in the past.
Clean water systems were established, alongside sanitary toilets and handwashing stations, with the aim of improving public health and reducing the risk of diseases associated with unsafe water and poor sanitation.
These projects made a direct difference in residents’ daily lives by making water more accessible and creating a safer environment for children at school and families across the community.
The improvements also supported the project’s other development goals, as reliable access to safe water is directly connected to health, education, family stability, and economic productivity.
Opening a Healthcare Clinic Inside the Village
One of the most important stages of the project was completed with the opening of a healthcare clinic inside the village, turning access to medical care from a long and exhausting journey into a service available close to residents.
In the past, villagers had to travel for around an hour by motorcycle to access even basic levels of medical care, creating a significant health and financial burden on families.
The new clinic enables earlier diagnosis of common illnesses, including malaria and respiratory infections, while also supporting care for mothers and children during and after childbirth and reducing the expenses associated with traveling elsewhere for treatment.
On the clinic’s first day of operation, medical care was provided to the first 100 patients, highlighting the importance of the new facility for the local community.
Having healthcare services nearby gives families greater stability and helps parents continue working without having to stop for extended periods in search of medical treatment.
A Difficult Reality Before the Development Project
The village is located in Ghana’s Eastern Region and has a population of more than 1,062 people. The local economy depends heavily on cocoa farming as its main source of income.
Before the project was implemented, the village faced significant economic and living challenges. Average family income ranged from just $100 to $120, while basic infrastructure for clean water, sanitation, education, and healthcare was largely absent.
These conditions contributed to child labor rates of around 40%, while absenteeism among students from grades four through nine increased during cocoa harvest seasons because of economic hardship and the need for some children to work on farms.
Residents also faced limited access to healthcare and difficulty reaching medical services, making an integrated development intervention essential to improving quality of life in the community.
A Comprehensive Transformation in Less Than a Year
In less than a year of sustained work, the village experienced wide-ranging changes across many aspects of daily life.
The projects included constructing and renovating classrooms, building teacher housing, providing clean water and electricity, establishing sanitation facilities and handwashing stations, launching school meal programs, and opening the healthcare clinic.
Work was also carried out to strengthen community awareness of the value of education and address prevailing attitudes toward child labor, ensuring that change would go beyond physical infrastructure and extend to social behavior and future opportunities for the next generation.
This transformation was made possible through a strategic partnership bringing together the 1 Billion Followers Summit and Beast Industries, founded by MrBeast, with support from Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives and the Varkey Foundation, in addition to the direct efforts of teams working at the project site.
Five Pillars Shaping a New Future for the Village
The project was based on an integrated development vision designed to connect the community’s essential needs rather than treating each challenge through separate, short-term interventions.
In education, classrooms were improved, teacher stability was supported, and meals were provided to students.
In public health, the focus was on clean water, sanitation, and handwashing facilities.
In healthcare, the new clinic created a direct point of medical care within the village, while awareness programs supported education and efforts to reduce child labor.
Economic opportunities formed part of a broader vision to help the community build a more sustainable future and strengthen families’ ability to cope with financial hardship without sacrificing their children’s education.
From a Village in Ghana to a Global Story
The project represents more than a local development initiative. MrBeast and the team of participating creators are working to turn the village’s story into an inspiring global model that demonstrates the ability of purposeful content to produce real development impact.
James Stephen Donaldson, MrBeast, said that what had been achieved in Ghana proved that the power of digital content could change communities for the better.
He said: “When we traveled with 20 global creators and saw the difficult conditions the residents were living in without healthcare or clean water, our decision was decisive: to make this place a model that leads a radical change in the concepts of giving and positive impact, and inspires millions around the world to become creators of real impact in communities.”
The village’s transformation is being documented through a series of exclusive videos that reveal behind-the-scenes stages of the project, including a dedicated video about the creation of the healthcare clinic.
The content follows the journey from the medical challenges faced by the community amid shortages of electricity and equipment, through support for local medical teams and collaborative construction work with content creators, to the clinic’s opening and the start of treatment for patients.
A Global Network Supporting Positive Impact
The project benefits from MrBeast’s broad digital reach, alongside the influence of a network of around 3,000 creators across 180 countries, with the goal of bringing the village’s transformation story to a global audience.
