Dubai’s ambitious plans for Al Maktoum International Airport go beyond developing the world’s largest airport in terms of infrastructure and passenger capacity. The emirate is equally focused on delivering the best possible passenger experience, with advanced technology, efficient operations, and seamless travel at the heart of its vision.
The project also presents an opportunity to rethink how airports are designed and operated from the outset, bringing infrastructure, technology, and passenger needs together under one integrated approach.
Al Maktoum International Airport: Ambitions Beyond Size and Capacity
Eng. Khalifa Al Zaffin, CEO of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Dubai South, said, “Dubai’s ambition is not limited to building the world’s largest airport in terms of infrastructure and passenger capacity, but also includes delivering the best passenger experience.”
He stressed the need for airports to be flexible enough to accommodate new technologies and adapt to future developments in the aviation industry.
His remarks highlighted Dubai’s focus on passenger experience alongside the scale of airport infrastructure and capacity, with flexibility playing an important role in preparing airports for future changes.
Dubai Highlights the Future of Airports
The future of airport development was a major focus of the 13th Global Airport Leaders’ Forum, held alongside the 25th Airport Show at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
The forum brought together government officials, aviation experts, and representatives of companies working in the aviation sector to discuss the changes shaping airport design and operations.
Much of the discussion centered on how rapidly advancing technologies can make air travel simpler and more convenient. Participants also explored ways to improve the overall travel experience while meeting the needs of different groups of passengers.
The discussions reflected the growing importance of combining technology with efficient airport operations to provide services that are easier to use and better suited to passenger needs.
Three Key Priorities for Improving the Passenger Experience
Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, identified collaboration, operational flexibility, and innovation as three main priorities for the future of airports.
He emphasized that “Passengers view their journey through the airport as an integrated experience, rather than a collection of separate services and procedures.”
His comments drew attention to the importance of coordination between the different services and operations involved in a passenger’s journey.
Instead of looking at each airport procedure separately, the focus is on how those procedures work together to make the entire journey smoother and more convenient for travelers.
Technology at the Heart of Al Maktoum International Airport’s Design
Abdullah Al Shamsi, Senior Manager of Future of Things at Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, said the Al Maktoum International Airport project provides an opportunity to rethink airport design and operations from the ground up.
He highlighted the value of integrating infrastructure, technology, and the passenger experience into one overall vision from the start, rather than introducing technological solutions into facilities and procedures that are already in place.
This approach allows technology and passenger needs to be considered during the airport’s initial design, while giving the project greater flexibility to accommodate future developments.
It also places operational efficiency and ease of travel at the center of the airport’s planning process.
