Etihad Rail, the United Arab Emirates’ ambitious railway project, is poised to transform the nation’s transportation landscape by launching its passenger service in 2026. This development aims to connect key cities across all seven emirates, providing a fast, efficient, and sustainable mode of travel for residents and visitors alike.
High-Speed Connectivity Across the Emirates
The passenger trains are designed to reach speeds of up to 200 km/h, significantly cutting down travel times between major cities. For instance, the journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai is expected to take just 57 minutes, while the trip from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will be approximately 105 minutes .
In addition to the standard service, plans are underway for a high-speed rail link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which will operate at speeds of up to 350 km/h, reducing travel time between the two cities to a mere 30 minutes .
State-of-the-Art Passenger Experience
Each Etihad Rail passenger train will accommodate up to 400 passengers, offering various classes including first, business, and economy. The trains will be equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, charging points, and comfortable seating arrangements to ensure a pleasant journey for all travelers .
Strategic Station Locations
The rail network will feature strategically located stations to maximize accessibility and convenience. In Abu Dhabi, the main station is expected to be situated along the corridor separating Mussafah Industrial Area and Mohammed Bin Zayed City. Dubai’s station is anticipated to be near the Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station, while Fujairah’s station is under construction in the Sakamkam area .
Economic and Environmental Impact
The introduction of the Etihad Rail passenger service is projected to contribute significantly to the UAE’s economy, with estimates suggesting an addition of Dh145 billion to the GDP over the next five decades . Environmentally, the rail network is expected to reduce road traffic and associated carbon emissions, aligning with the nation’s sustainability goals.
Future Expansion Plans
Looking ahead, Etihad Rail has plans to extend its network beyond the UAE’s borders. A notable project is the proposed rail link between the UAE and Oman, known as the Hafeet Rail Project, which will connect Sohar in Oman to Al Wathba in Abu Dhabi, further enhancing regional connectivity.
As the 2026 launch date approaches, Etihad Rail’s passenger service stands as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and economic growth, promising a new era of travel for the region.
