Abu Dhabi Unveils First Licence Plate for Self‑Driving Delivery

Abu Dhabi has taken a major step toward autonomous urban logistics by issuing its first licence plate for a self‑driving delivery vehicle, marking a regulatory milestone in the emirate’s transport evolution.

What’s Happening

  • The Integrated Transport Centre of Abu Dhabi (also called Abu Dhabi Mobility), under the oversight of the Smart & Autonomous Systems Council and with support from Abu Dhabi Investment Office, has launched a pilot programme for autonomous delivery vehicles in Masdar City.

  • The project is in partnership with K2 and EMX (the logistics arm of 7X), with the autonomous delivery pods developed by Autogo, a subsidiary of K2.

  • These vehicles are equipped with AI‑driven systems and are capable of navigating urban streets and delivering orders without human intervention.

Why It Matters

  • Regulatory first: Issuing a licence plate for a driverless delivery vehicle is among the first formal acts integrating autonomous logistics into Abu Dhabi’s traffic and transport regulation system.

  • Smart mobility goals: This initiative fits within Abu Dhabi’s vision of making 25% of all trips use smart transport solutions by 2040. Autonomous delivery is part of that broader strategy.

  • Sustainability & efficiency: The self‑driving delivery vehicles are expected to help reduce congestion and cut carbon emissions, while improving delivery speed and reliability.

What’s Next

  • The current trial is in Masdar City, but the plan is to expand beyond that area, including wider public zones. Full‑scale commercial deployment is anticipated in the coming months.

  • The initiative also supports localisation of technology under Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) cluster, aiming to strengthen local capabilities in autonomous systems and smart infrastructure.
