Today marks the sixth anniversary of the launch of the Hope Probe as part of the Emirates Mars Mission, which began in July 2020 carrying an ambitious Arab scientific vision toward the Red Planet and opening a new chapter in the UAE’s involvement in space and planetary science.

Since the mission began, the Hope Probe has represented a major milestone in the country’s scientific journey. It became the first Arab and Islamic mission to explore another planet and successfully entered Mars orbit on February 9, 2021.

With that achievement, the UAE became the fifth country in the world to reach the orbit of the Red Planet and the first to do so successfully on its initial attempt.

A Scientific Project Supporting the Knowledge Economy

The importance of the Hope Probe extends beyond simply reaching Mars. The mission also supports the UAE’s broader vision of building an economy based on knowledge, innovation, and advanced technology.

The project has helped strengthen the country’s position as an active partner in the international scientific community by producing open scientific data, developing specialized national expertise, and expanding cooperation with universities and research centers in space science and planetary atmospheres.

It has also created opportunities to grow the number of Emirati researchers and engineers working in advanced scientific fields, supporting the long-term sustainability of the country’s future space programs.

A Comprehensive View of the Martian Atmosphere

The Hope Probe was designed to provide a broad and integrated study of the Martian atmosphere through an elliptical scientific orbit ranging from about 20,000 to 43,000 kilometers above the planet.

This orbit allows the spacecraft to observe large areas of Mars at different times of the Martian day while also tracking weather and climate changes across different seasons.

What distinguishes the Emirates Mars Mission from many earlier missions is its focus on studying the Martian atmosphere as one interconnected system rather than concentrating only on a specific region or atmospheric layer.

This approach has helped scientists examine the relationship between events taking place in the lower atmosphere and processes occurring in the upper layers. These include the movement of energy and gases, the effects of Martian weather, and the mechanisms through which parts of the atmosphere escape into space.

Three Scientific Instruments Studying the Red Planet

The Hope Probe carries three main scientific instruments, each designed to collect a different type of information about Mars.

The Emirates Exploration Imager captures high-resolution images of the planet and is also used to study visible phenomena in the lower atmosphere, including clouds, dust storms, and daily weather changes.

The Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer measures temperatures and monitors the distribution of dust, water vapor, and ice crystals in the lower and middle atmosphere.

The Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer studies the upper atmosphere and observes the escape of gases such as hydrogen and oxygen into space.

The combined work of these three instruments has provided scientists with a clearer picture of how the different layers of the Martian atmosphere interact. This is one of the key scientific contributions that has given the mission international importance.

More Than 10 Terabytes of Scientific Data

Since entering Mars orbit, the Hope Probe has continued to collect large amounts of data, images, and scientific information related to the atmosphere of the Red Planet.

The mission has gathered and shared more than 10 terabytes of scientific data with researchers around the world, creating a valuable archive that can support both current and future studies.

So far, the mission has released 16 batches of open scientific data through its official science data center. The information has been made freely available to universities, researchers, and international scientific institutions.

More than 200 universities and research organizations have used data collected by the Hope Probe, reflecting the wide scientific value of the mission’s findings.

The data has also contributed to the publication of more than 35 peer-reviewed scientific papers in international journals. In addition, the mission team has delivered more than 250 scientific presentations at local and global conferences and research events.

Research Partnerships and National Expertise

Within the UAE, the Emirates Mars Mission has helped strengthen scientific research and increase cooperation between national institutions.

These efforts have included research partnerships with United Arab Emirates University and New York University Abu Dhabi, with the goal of using Hope Probe data in joint studies and specialized research on planetary science and atmospheric processes.

Such partnerships support the development of national expertise and create new opportunities for students and researchers to work with real space data. They also allow them to contribute to scientific knowledge that can be published and used internationally.

New Discoveries About Mars

Throughout its years of operation, the Hope Probe has recorded several scientific discoveries that have added new information to humanity’s understanding of the Red Planet.

Among the most important findings was the observation of different forms of Martian auroras, including sinuous auroras and discrete auroras.

Studying these phenomena has helped scientists improve their understanding of the interaction between the Martian atmosphere, solar winds, and the magnetic environments surrounding the planet.

The probe’s continuous observations have also provided valuable information about daily and seasonal changes in the atmosphere, the movement of dust, clouds, and water vapor, and the factors linked to the loss of certain gases into space.

Hope Probe Mission Extended Until 2028

In February 2026, the UAE Space Agency announced the extension of the Hope Probe mission until 2028 after its scientific instruments continued to operate efficiently and remained capable of collecting valuable data.

The extension gives scientists an opportunity to study Martian climate and seasonal changes over a longer period. It also allows them to monitor recurring or unusual weather events and compare new data with information collected during the mission’s earlier years.

Six years after its launch, the Hope Probe continues to serve as an Emirati scientific platform supporting researchers around the world. It also reflects the UAE’s commitment to investing in advanced science and building national expertise capable of contributing to future space missions.
