Dubai Creek Illuminations

In line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, regarding the launch of new projects and initiatives by Dubai Municipality, the municipality has announced the start of construction on the “Dubai Creek Illuminations” project.

The project aims to deliver an integrated visual and urban experience along Dubai Creek. It will extend across a total distance of 8 kilometers, with an implementation cost of AED 80 million, adding a major new development to Dubai Municipality’s ongoing efforts to upgrade urban landmarks and public facilities, improve quality of life, and strengthen Dubai’s position as the best city in the world to live, work, and visit.

The “Dubai Creek Illuminations” project is designed to highlight the aesthetic and historical identity of the creek and its surrounding areas. It will reintroduce this long-standing landmark through a modern nighttime experience that celebrates its heritage and draws attention to its architectural and cultural features, further reinforcing its status as one of the emirate’s most important historical, cultural, and civilizational landmarks.

The launch of the project coincides with Dubai ranking first on the list of the world’s most beautiful cities at night for 2026, according to a comprehensive global study based on several criteria. These included safety levels, the quality of the nighttime urban experience, the variety of evening activities and experiences, the availability of spaces dedicated to them, and the beauty of the city’s urban views.

This global ranking reflects Dubai’s leading position as an urban and tourism destination. The “Dubai Creek Illuminations” project also represents an extension of the emirate’s approach to developing and reimagining urban experiences by creating a new nighttime destination along the creek that helps improve quality of life and enriches the experience of residents and visitors.

The project will also bring greater energy and visual appeal to waterfronts, public spaces, and open areas after dark, giving visitors an opportunity to explore Dubai Creek through an integrated visual setting that combines the authenticity of the location with modern lighting solutions.

For many decades, the lights along the banks of the creek guided ships and traditional commercial vessels as they traveled through its waters carrying goods and trade. Today, lighting is returning to the creek in a contemporary form through this project, creating a new urban experience for visitors and tourists in the heart of Dubai while highlighting the landmarks stretching along its shores.

The project is also expected to enrich the tourism experience and stimulate commercial activity along the creek, while increasing the appeal of nearby markets, historical districts, and waterfront destinations after sunset.

It will cover six key areas and include more than 5,000 lighting units of various types. The visual effects of the installations will be visible from an altitude of more than 1,500 feet above ground level.

The areas covered by the project include the Creek Wharf, the Creek Promenade near the Gold Souk, the creek entrance at Infinity Bridge, the Al Shindagha Historic District, Bur Dubai Souk, and Al Seef Marina.

The project includes the installation of an innovative lighting system that will strengthen the visual identity of the location and highlight the details of waterfronts, historical districts, and nearby heritage markets at night, providing residents and visitors with a richer and more engaging experience.

“Dubai Creek Illuminations” will also rely on sustainable lighting solutions that are friendly to marine life, helping achieve a balance between improving the urban landscape and preserving the creek’s natural environment and ecological characteristics.

The work will include upgrading the lighting of the piers, creek entrances, building facades, pathways running alongside the creek, and the creek promenade. These improvements are intended to create a lively, safe, and pedestrian-friendly urban experience that supports the objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.

Dubai Creek.. A Legacy That Witnessed Dubai’s Growth

His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said: “Throughout the emirate’s history, Dubai Creek has established its position as a historic artery for trade and business and as a starting point for Dubai’s urban, economic, and commercial development journey. It has become a landmark and a witness to defining and remarkable stages in Dubai’s foundation and growth. Today, through the Dubai Creek Illuminations project, we are reviving part of the journey of the past along its banks as a cultural legacy, highlighting its urban and cultural identity, and presenting it through a unique nighttime experience that enhances the well-being and quality of life of Dubai’s residents and visitors. Our goal in every project we implement is to make Dubai the most beautiful and attractive city in the world through an urban vision that balances the preservation of local identity with the use of the latest urban solutions.”

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said: “Dubai Creek Illuminations is a distinctive project by Dubai Municipality that aims to transform the creek into an exceptional nighttime destination combining architectural, historical, and cultural beauty. It is based on the implementation of an integrated lighting system that uses advanced technologies and engineering solutions designed to respect the architectural and heritage characteristics of each area along the creek while enhancing interactive experiences. The works have also been designed to highlight the details of the waterfronts, markets, and historical buildings, while providing lighting levels that ensure visual comfort, improve pedestrian safety, and elevate the quality of the nighttime experience.”

The project will enhance the cultural and aesthetic value of Dubai Creek and reinforce its position as one of the emirate’s most prominent historical, cultural, and economic symbols. It will do so by creating an integrated visual identity that celebrates the history of the location and gives it a new urban dimension reflecting Dubai’s spirit and its continuous journey of development.

The “Dubai Creek Illuminations” project is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2027. It will become another major addition to the series of high-quality projects being carried out by Dubai Municipality to develop waterfronts and public spaces and transform them into integrated world-class destinations.

The project is also expected to support tourism and economic activity in the areas surrounding the creek, enhance its appeal to residents and visitors, and further strengthen Dubai’s position as the best city in the world to live, work, and visit.
