Dubai has strengthened its position on the global tourism map, ranking first in the Middle East and fourth worldwide among destinations with the lowest additional costs for solo travelers. The ranking highlights the relatively small difference between the cost of visiting the emirate alone and sharing a vacation with another person.
According to an analysis by TravelSupermarket, a seven-night vacation in Dubai costs an average of $2,463 for a solo traveler, compared with $1,875 per person when two people travel together and share accommodation expenses. That represents a difference of $588, or 31.4%.
The findings come as solo travel continues to gain popularity worldwide, with a growing number of travelers seeking destinations where they can enjoy a vacation on their own without facing significantly higher accommodation costs.
Dubai Among the World’s Top Five Destinations for Solo Travelers
Dubai secured a place among the five destinations worldwide with the lowest percentage increases in solo travel costs, placing it ahead of several popular international vacation spots.
Khao Lak in Thailand topped the global ranking, with a weeklong vacation costing an average of $1,865 for a solo traveler, compared with $1,539 per person when traveling with a companion. The difference amounts to approximately $327, representing an increase of 21.4%.
Phuket, also in Thailand, ranked second, with an average cost of $2,621 for a solo traveler, compared with $2,136 per person when two people share their travel expenses. The additional cost is approximately 23%.
Burgas in Bulgaria took third place, with a solo vacation costing $1,035, compared with $793 per person when traveling as a pair. The difference represents an increase of 30.6%.
Dubai ranked fourth globally and first in the Middle East, while Athens, the Greek capital, rounded out the top five. A solo traveler visiting Athens can expect to spend an average of $1,697, compared with $1,277 per person when traveling with someone else, an increase of 32.7%, according to the study.
What Makes Dubai Stand Out in Solo Travel Costs?
Dubai’s position in the ranking reflects the relatively modest difference between what solo travelers pay and the amount spent by individuals who share their vacation expenses with a companion.
The travel industry commonly refers to this difference as the “solo travel tax,” which describes the additional cost a person faces when traveling alone rather than splitting expenses with someone else.
The difference is mainly associated with accommodation costs. A solo traveler typically pays the full price of a hotel room, while two people sharing the same room can divide the expense, reducing the average cost for each person.
In Dubai, the additional cost stands at 31.4%, one of the lowest percentages among the destinations included in the analysis. This gives the emirate a competitive position among destinations for solo travelers, alongside its range of accommodation, entertainment, and tourism experiences.
Barcelona and New York Among the Most Expensive Destinations for Solo Travelers
The study also revealed substantial differences in solo travel expenses across popular international destinations, with some cities recording additional costs exceeding 70% and 80% compared with traveling with a companion.
Barcelona, Spain, topped the list of destinations with the highest solo travel premium, recording an increase of approximately 84%. A weeklong vacation costs an average of $2,444 for a solo traveler, compared with $1,333 per person when traveling as a couple, a difference of around $1,111.
The Greek island of Corfu ranked second, with an average solo vacation costing $2,248, compared with $1,240 per person when traveling with someone else. That represents an increase of 81%.
Ibiza, Spain, took third place, with a seven-night vacation costing approximately $2,546 for a solo traveler, compared with $1,408 per person when sharing travel expenses with a companion. The additional cost amounts to 80.4%.
New York ranked fourth among destinations with the highest additional costs for solo travelers. A weeklong trip costs an average of $4,617 for someone traveling alone, compared with $2,695 per person when two people travel together, an increase of 71.5%.
Marrakech, Morocco, completed the top five, with an average weekly vacation cost of $2,052 for a solo traveler, compared with $1,203 per person when traveling as a pair. The difference represents an increase of 70.6%.
These figures illustrate the considerable differences in accommodation expenses between destinations and the importance of comparing costs when planning a vacation alone.
Solo Travel Records 89% Growth Worldwide
The findings come amid a significant rise in solo travel worldwide, with the number of flights taken by people traveling alone increasing by 89% over the past decade.
This growth reflects rising interest in independent vacations, particularly among women, as more travelers choose to explore new destinations and enjoy travel experiences on their own.
As solo travel continues to attract more people, the difference in cost between traveling alone and sharing expenses becomes an increasingly important consideration when planning a vacation. Accommodation expenses, in particular, can have a significant impact on the overall cost of a trip when they are not shared with a companion.
